COUNTY COMPETITIONS

Hi Everyone, it is time to start thinking about next years county competitions. If you have never gone in for a competition before, then why not give it a try. Entries are put in by your club in February, so make sure you let your club know which competitions you wish to enter. If you want more information please contact one of the competition secretaries, you will find their details under "Officers".

NATIONAL COMPETITIONS

The window is now open for you to enter the national competitions, unlike the county competitions you enter these directly through the Bowls England website. Once again we would encourage those who have never entered before to have a go. Click here to enter

Merrow Bowls club have excelled this year.

They have entered Guildford in Bloom in the best community project section and the themed entry which this year was butterflies. They won Gold for the Community Project but managed to get Best themed entry including a huge goblet shaped cut glass vase. This is what the judges said
“The Merrow Bowls Club members have created a beautiful surrounding garden to their bowls green, with wild areas of nettles, wildflowers  and plants for pollinators abounding, many grown from seed. A butterfly shaped bug hotel (4’ across) made by a member, is practical and beautiful. Basket woven butterfly stakes also made by members, decorate. Nettle tea is made to feed the bowling green, compost bins are carefully filled and rotated, all by volunteer club members, with many turning out to tell us all about it… their enthusiasm and care was outstanding”.
Bowling isn’t about just bowling; its about community, friendship and support for each other. Entering a project like this expands the exposure of bowls to the community at large. The presentation evening was followed up by a Radio interview explaining how the volunteer bowlers had all worked together so well to achieve an amazing result.

Surrey retain the Home Counties League Cup

Played at Egham BC in the rain on 19th July against a very good team from the Royal County of Berkshire. Surrey got off to a flying start and at one stage were 39 shots ahead, but Berkshire to their credit fought back and got to within 3 shots, Surrey managed to hold on to win by 11 shots.

All credit must be given to all players from both teams for making it such a good match to watch. Thanks go to the umpire Charlotte who got absolutely soaked.
Thanks also go to Egham outdoor BC for hosting the event.

Above, a very proud Barrie Emanuel receiving the trophy from the Home Counties Chairman Mark Broadway.

Barrie has put together a very good squad, as a result Surrey have won the League two years consecutively. This is a very hard league to win.
Well done Barrie, lets make it three next year.

WHO SAID IT WAS AN OLD PERSONS GAME? WELL THEY ARE WRONG.

Bowls Surrey entered two girls teams into the National Amy Rose competition & two boys teams into the National White Rose competition.
Congratulations to the girls B team who were successful and have qualified for the National finals at Leamington. Team B of the boys teams just missed out to Kent by two shots of qualifying.
Just to give you an idea of what was was involved, the competition ran over two days for the boys, each team starting at 09:30 am & finishing at 18:00 pm, each team between them played a total of 176 ends and bowled 856 bowls. It was very tiring, enjoyable & a great experience. They all did surrey proud.
There were a large number of spectators, a great couple of days was had by all. Our thanks go to Southey BC & Horsham BC for hosting the event.
