NORMA BEALES A SPECIAL TRIBUTE

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Norma Beales, a former England international player, a prominent member of Buckinghamshire and Surrey and also a regular volunteer at Bowls England events

Norma was very highly regarded bowler, who began her journey to the highest level at Burnham Bowls Club in Buckinghamshire and where she would partner the exceptional Mary Price.

The pair would earn Buckinghamshire County Honours between 1995 and 2005, including winning the Ladies’ Pairs seven times, the Triples with Julie Skelly twice and the Fours three times, accompanied by Sheila O’Hara, Gilly Bunce and Bridget and Katrina Jones.

Norma would also go one better in Buckinghamshire colours, becoming a National Champion in the Ladies’ Pairs in 1995 and the Ladies’ Fours a year later. The latter victory gave her team the chance to represent England and compete in the 1997 British Isles Fours, which they won.

After a brief hiatus from playing outdoors, Norma once more found herself on course to becoming a National Champion again, this time winning the title playing for Egham Bowls Club in Surrey. Norma would also repeat her achievement from 1997, winning the British Isles Fours in 2016 under the stewardship of Tony Allcock OBE.

Norma was an extremely skilled bowls player and a wonderful member of the bowling community. Her absence will be felt by many, and our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to her family and friends during this difficult time.

The funeral service will take place on Tuesday 28th April 2025, at 1:30pm, at Easthampstead Crematorium, South Road, Wokingham, RG40 3DW, followed by a celebration of her life at Egham Bowls Club, TW20 9LX. Norma’s family would love if everyone would wear something pink or purple to honour her favourite colours.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Please see below two photos of the first match under the English Women's Bowling Association (EWBA) between Surrey & Sussex in 1932.

Will Johns a member at Purley Bury and the great nephew of Clara Johns was shown these photos by Sheron Mitchell, he said that Clara presented the EWBA with the "Johns Trophy" which is still a National competition now played under Bowls England.

International Selection: Amar to Represent Portugal!

We are thrilled to share some truly "Big News" from the international stage. Our very own Amar Nachimuthu has been officially selected to represent the Portugal National Bowls Team at the upcoming European Bowls Championships in Wales this September 2026!
Following the trials held at the Alvor Bowls Club in the Algarve, Amar received the news of his selection on February 18th. He is currently pre-selected to compete in both the Singles and Triples disciplines. While the final team combinations remain fluid to adapt to the Welsh greens, Amar is ready for the challenge.
Amar noted, "Personally, I’ve always enjoyed playing as Lead. However, I’m more than happy to slot in wherever the team needs me to bring home the best result for the country."
The European Bowls Championships will take place at Llandrindod Wells, from September 19th to 26th.
It is a significant honour for both Croydon Bowling Club and Bowls Surrey to have representation on the international stage. Please join us in wishing Amar the very best of luck as he prepares to head to Wales!

WHO SAID IT WAS AN OLD PERSONS GAME? WELL THEY ARE WRONG.

Bowls Surrey entered two girls teams into the National Amy Rose competition & two boys teams into the National White Rose competition.
Congratulations to the girls B team who were successful and have qualified for the National finals at Leamington. Team B of the boys teams just missed out to Kent by two shots of qualifying.
Just to give you an idea of what was was involved, the competition ran over two days for the boys, each team starting at 09:30 am & finishing at 18:00 pm, each team between them played a total of 176 ends and bowled 856 bowls. It was very tiring, enjoyable & a great experience. They all did surrey proud.
There were a large number of spectators, a great couple of days was had by all. Our thanks go to Southey BC & Horsham BC for hosting the event.
