JULY 2023

Old Coulsdon Bowling Club – 24 hour Bowlathon!

What a weekend! The idea for a 24 hour Bowlathon came about when our club looked at the Guinness World Record for a bowls match – an amazing 32 hours and 34 minutes of continuous bowling. In order to see whether we had the physical capability and stamina to beat that record, we thought we might try continuous bowling by a team of sturdy players for 24 hours – and the idea became a reality last weekend. The whole idea had been Malcolm Cooper’s vision, our Men’s Outdoor Club Captain in 2022 but sadly he passed away in May 2023 after a short illness and was not able to see the Bowlathon come together. However, he clearly gave us the inspiration and motivation and the event was held in his memory. A core of 4 players were supported by many others both completing the 24 hour triples or playing on adjacent rinks. At 6pm on Saturday 15 July play got under way and with a bell rung on the hour every hour, the countdown to play for 24 hours commenced.
With floodlights being used from 10pm or so (thank you Chipstead BC who lent them to us) through to sunrise, the atmosphere was amazing with spectators and players supporting, music playing and a general bon homie around the green.
Money was raised over the weekend for both the Club and the Old Coulsdon centre for the Retired (the Club’s selected charity) and through a huge raffle (all prizes donated), cake sales, bacon rolls, a BBQ, sweepstakes, sponsorship, an auction of some golf and cricket tickets. The Club raised over £5k in total.  This also included the Club Steward raising over £1,300 doing a 24 hour Barathon!
As 6pm on Sunday 16 July neared and the penultimate bell was rung, many members including Malcolm’s family, came up to cheer on the exhausted players. Interestingly they played just over 212 ends! And you think 21 ends is too long! They reckon they could have gone on for longer and now have the Guinness World Record in mind for 2025. A huge congratulations and thanks went to all the players, spectators and local bowls clubs who supported the event.

Mike McDonagh Surrey's "Miracle Man"

Following trials at Leamington last weekend Mike McDonagh of Cheam BC has just been advised that he has been selected for the Disability Bowls High performance squad for 2023 & 2024 seasons. This does not necessarily guarantee any match selections but the Home Nations, Commonwealth Games and World Championship teams will all be selected from within this group.  Achieving top match selections will be challenging, firstly because the extent of my recovery (for which I am eternally grateful) means that I carry the highest level of handicap and because I am pretty much the “Grandad” of the squad and they have some pretty gruelling schedules.  But I am very proud to at least be in the squad and in contention.

May 2023

Congratulations also to Gill Platt a "Disability Bowls International" of Wonersh BC, is also in the high performance squad for 2023 / 2024

Congratulations to

Charlie Souter of Egham Bowling Club & George Hopper of Newdigate Bowling Club.

Charlie has been selected to represent England in British Isles Championships in the Senior Team at Ayr in Scotland from 30th
George has been short listed for the Under 18's squad. The final selection will be made after the Junior Performance Day on 9th July. If successful he will represent England in the Under 18's Team at Ebbu Vale in Wales on 5th & 6th August.
