President's message 2024

Fellow Bowlers
It is particularly exciting to be the President of SCWBA in such an important year when the two associations have become one, under the banner of Bowls Surrey. I am looking forward to working with the SCBA President Robin Fudge as we move forward as a new association.

As Vice President last season it was great to meet so many bowlers from all areas of the County and I am really looking forward to meeting many more of you in the coming season. I currently have no Vice President so I am extremely grateful to both the past and present officers who have offered me their support.

I am also thankful that I have received the full support of my club Horsell and also the West Surrey Ladies who have not only offered their support but have also pledged a very generous donation to my charity.

This year I will be supporting 'Bright Cancer Care', the charity based at the Royal Surrey Hospital and St Lukes Cancer Centre in Guildford. This charity holds a very special place in my heart as the 2 original patrons were Dr Essapen my oncologist and my liver surgeon Professor Karanjia. The survival rates for cancers metastasising to the liver have increased dramatically since the charity was set up in 1997. When Professor Karanjia started work at the Royal Surrey the survival rate for secondary liver cancer from bowel cancer was only 1% at 5 years. Now nearly 50% of these patients are alive at 5 years and 30% are cured - I am pleased to say I am one of the lucky 30% - after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2012, it then metastasised to my liver twice, and following 2 liver resections in 2014 and 2015 I was finally given the all clear in December 2020. They receive patients from all areas of Surrey, so I felt it was an ideal charity to support during my Presidential year.

It is very exciting that Surrey has been nominated for County of the Year are the upcoming Bowls England Awards in February and I am looking forward to attending. I am also looking forward to supporting (along with my husband Roy) our Surrey bowlers at the British Isles Championships in June and Leamington in August.

Grass roots bowling is very important to me and I am hoping to meet as many club bowlers as possible during the season. I am also very passionate about supporting our Surrey Juniors and will be very pleased to welcome them to my club for a match in May.

I would like to wish you all a very successful and enjoyable season. I know I can look forward to making many new bowling friendships.

See you on the green soon.

Many thanks,

Pam
